The 'Double Punishment' For Black Undocumented Immigrants

I hadn't thought about this, so I found it interesting. Along with President Trump's inane comments. Brother had a maple leaf tatoo that a cop noticed...“The dude just asked if I was Canadian, the next thing I knew I was in here”—“here” being the remote and sprawling Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center in Eloy, Arizona. The New York Times reported that the presence of immigrants from Haiti and Nigeria, who together represent roughly 20 percent of the foreign-born black population, vexed president Trump. [*Why I can't believe this man is President] The Haitians “all have AIDS,” Trump said in a June meeting with his top advisors according to the Times, while the Nigerians would not “go back to their huts” after seeing America, he said. (The White House denied the comments.) [🤯😬] Research suggests that because black people in the United States are more likely to be stopped, arrested, and incarcerated, black immigrants may be disproportionately vulnerable to deportation." [duh]. ~article below

Kahok's Fire Dance Class Reunion 1980.AVI

BEHOLD THE GLORY OF OUR MASCOT CHIEF KAHOK. We were talking about school mascots. NOBODY beats Chief Kahok. In Collinsville for home games and school spirit assemblies in our gym, Chief Kahok in loin cloth and full headdress, bells on ankles, would dance. Princess Kahok had a leather fringed tunic, beaded headband with one eagle feather danced too. THEN Chief Kahok removed the headdress and did the fire hoop dance. AWESOME!! It was the only time I didn't try to skip out of an assembly. Loved the fire hoop dance. Can't believe I found a video!!! 1980 was my last year. (I am in the class of '81, but I had enough credits to finish in Dec. 1980 so I baled ASAP. Hated high school, except for my dad who was an epic vice principal there and my sister Renee was a substitute English teacher. And Mark Ceries.) "The school song is performed at halftime of home basketball games. Chief and Princess Kahok provide a traditional Indian dance. Chief Kahok usually performs with a hoop of fire, although there was time in the 1960s when Chief Kahoks battled another Indian during the song using a shield and a tomahawk." ~ Collinsville High School web site

The Latest: Pope meets island leaders, decries rising seas

YES. "Pope Francis is blasting "shortsighted human activity" for global warming and rising sea levels and is urging leaders at climate talks in Germany to take a global outlook as they negotiate ways to curb heat-trapping emissions. Francis met Saturday with a delegation of leaders from the Pacific islands and told them he shares their concerns about rising sea levels and increasingly intense storms that are threatening their small islands. He decried in particular the state of oceans, where overfishing and pollution by plastics are threatening fish stocks and sea life that are critical to Pacific livelihoods."

Cubs to lions: What's next for ISIL's child soldiers?

This blows my mind. This boy is 16 now and free from ISIL. But "Kasswara* joined ISIL when he was 14. "We were the 'cleaners' group. Cleaning means slitting the throats of those who belong to the other side and are hiding," the teenager from Raqqa, Syria, said. "A guy from my area was decapitated by [ISIL] because of me. People had their hands chopped off because of me." I'm back to distraction and bewilderment in the face of such unbridled inhumanity.

Shamshad TV news reader's courage leaves Afghans in awe

Another feel good story! Rare from Afghanistan for us or Afghanis. This news anchor appeared on-air calm and professional just surviving after a bomb attack on the tv station. Victory in the face of defeat! How many spirits did he touch in that moment, on all sides? We must remember there real are people there who need hope: Aghanis, our troops 🇺🇸 and others trying to right a violently wronged country. They face death every day just by waking up in Afghanistan.🇦🇫 Defiant and with absolute resolve: "It is one of the most difficult countries to report from, but such attacks can only make us stronger," Sapy said. Tearful meeting for pair forever linked by face transplant

Face transplant recipient meets the donor's widow. "Lilly Ross feared seeing her husband’s face on a new man would trigger painful memories of losing him to suicide. Instead, she was proud to see his face transform another life." ~article I'm not invested in most "feel good stories". I'm too distracted and dumbfounded by rampant inhumanity. We witness infinite quantities of human resources channelled into inflicting barbarous, inhumane, cruelty and suffering world wide. The investment in technology, skills, and effort is staggering. Simply Google "Yemen" and look at the page of results. Please, go ahead right now. I just did and it takes a millisecond. I'll wait, I'm quite serious! We need to see that our highly advanced culture is capable and dedicated to more. In that light this donor story transcends a 'feel good' story. Impressive all: the technology, skill, and effort combined with the compassion of a woman, a new widow, who donated the face of her high school sweetheart. They are of the highest levels humanity can offer. Profound. In our world, "the needs of the many" do not "outweigh the needs of the few, or the one." There's only a single life involved and yes it's white, male, American, but that is not the point. That's never the point. That it even could and did happen matters. (always). The scope of imagination, ingenuity, dedication, and generosity is on an immeasurable scale. A scale of opportunity and hope. This man, the recipient, had been left horribly disfigured from a botched suicide attempt and subsequent reconstructive surgeries 10 years ago. He held a shot gun under his chin but only blew his face off. He'd since been living secluded without a nose and with his mouth sewn 3/4 shut. "Live long and prosper" - I'm sure he will, it's his third chance at life. One he didn't realize was worth living.

'Open restoration' workshop opens in Rome church

If I could do anything I wanted art restoration would be it. Where better than in Rome? "Rome, October 25 - The church of Santa Marta al Collegio Romano on Wednesday opened its doors to visitors as a showcase for art restoration run by Italy's Higher Institute for Conservation and Restoration (ISCR). Upon prior booking on the ISCR website visitors can now watch art restorers come to grips with a fresco by Domenichino of Narcissus admiring his reflection, originally from Palazzo Farnese, late 16th-century frescos of the Madonna that once decorated the choir stalls in the church then owned by Augustinian nuns, and 7,000 fresco and stucco fragments from an ancient Roman villa in the Tor Vergata area of Rome. Kenneth Clark saw government policy as contributing to the continued existence of black ghettos.

"A ghetto is a part of a city in which members of a minority group live, typically as a result of social, legal, or economic pressure." wiki Preparing for debate. Political conservatives love to point out that failed communities of blacks have been in staunch Democrat controlled areas for decades, with some have black leadership - duh! That's called representation, are those critics living in the communities and running for office? Blaming them for the results of earlier multifaceted, structured, and coordinated, efforts driven by social engineers such as boards of realtors, banks, and the government to geographically contain black people. Black folk packed up and shipped off from neighborhoods into "The Projects". The name is the same all over the country. You know what and where it is around you without ever having been there. In favor of urban renewal with shopping, theater, and parks. And Starbucks (we're 5-7 minutes from Neiman Marcus and Tiffany et al, they have a Starbucks. We're also a couple blocks from a long major road. But there's not one SB in our area or on that road for miles. There's "low income, subsidized, housing" near by = no SB.) Imagine a long-distance telephone conversation. "How is she doing? Where is she now? I haven't seen her in years!" Answer, "Oh, she's okay. She lives in the Projects with her 3 kids." It's a heavy word. Not one of promise or opportunity. Details don't matter anymore. (what's the neighborhood like? good schools? what's her house like? she's such a great cook, I bet her kitchen is something? she lives to garden, no doubt she has one?)

Donald Trump Is Rush-Shipping Condolences to Military Families

I'm not 'out to get' PT. I've been waiting for him to perform his, or any, duties with integrity. I believe in respecting the office the President. He makes it impossible. White House scrambled to get lists and info of fallen military heroes right after PT's claim to have contacted all, more, most families. This is so disturbing, callused, and disingenuous. That this has occurred in the sacred context of our most valuable citizens that have sacrificed EVERYTHING that they had to offer is painful. Literally. These are especially cruel times.

Jesner v Arab Bank: corporate liability under the Alien Tort Statute? | JD Supra

Grande finale...I only read this because I did not understand the headline on any level but it shows up in "stuff I'm interested in". Great piece! "All eyes are once again on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) as it turns its attention to the application of the Alien Tort Statute (ATS) to companies accused of complicity in human rights violations committed abroad." Honestly, it's very interesting! It will be a potentially huge ruling with global ramifications. Victims of Palestinian suicide attacks are trying to sue a bank for funding financial support for families of the bombers. Can a company be liable for actions beyond "international norms" like tortue or terrorism as opposed local domestic laws - which are not likely in the scope of such matters? Or something like that. :)

Withdrawal characterizes Trump view of U.S. role in world: Council on Foreign Relations head

"The Withdrawal Doctrine" - Richard Haas We've had the Monroe Doctrine and many other presidential themes. Now we have a new one freshly minted for Trump. So perfect. We can consolidate the method how to lose a leadership position of power and influence - lose opportunities for investments for and directing of research, innovation, future technology, energy, etc - to boost China's leadership role on multiple levels as they step up to the task - into one phrase. So weak and lame. How did this guy get to THE mic, the one in front of George Washington's White House portrait? I tried to give him a chance. Despite idiotic statements on white supremacy, this inane mindset is the deal-breaker. He can't devise a real plan or strategy, likely bores him, so like everything and everyone else he can't manhandle he destroys it and dumps it on the side of the road.

Space Radiation Won't Stop NASA's Human Exploration

How can you not love NASA?! NASA is our only surviving beacon of hope for a nation full of bitter and outraged cattle. Regardless of the many dangers of space radiation that can rip apart everything including metal, penetrate and alter DNA, and disrupt cellular processes, NASA remains confident of manned Mars missions... "Some people think that radiation will keep NASA from sending people to Mars, but that's not the current situation," said, Pat Troutman, NASA Human Exploration Strategic Analysis Lead. "When we add the various mitigation techniques up, we are optimistic it will lead to a successful Mars mission with a healthy crew that will live a very long and productive life after they return to Earth." School district removes 'To Kill a Mockingbird' from reading lists for the most alarming reason

"...makes people uncomfortable...". Thus we will never learn to process, discuss, and cope, with things outside our acceptance. Rare public statement from Harper Lee years ago: "Surely it is plain to the simplest intelligence that To Kill a Mockingbird spells out in words of seldom more than two syllables a code of honor and conduct, Christian in its ethic, that is the heritage of all Southerners. To hear that the novel is 'immoral' has made me count the years between now and 1984, for I have yet to come across a better example of doublethink," Lee wrote at the time, ending on a reference to George Orwell's famous dystopian novel. -article

‘Walden’ Wasn’t Thoreau’s Masterpiece

For Aaron Lisec - who fills me with delight to know one who will appreciate this special piece. It's powerful, an illustrative indirectly political and meaningful lesson without an ugly antagonistic tone. After he left Walden Pond, he took routinely daily walks with scraps of papers for notes, a stick to measure, collecting samples, observing and recording, pressing leaves and things in note books - all while writing about the marvels of it all. A beautiful balance between recording the dry process of data and the boundless wonder for nature. To be truly in tune with the environment, to know it and love it fully. There are links to read what is available from the journals online - free! "Thoreau’s real masterpiece is not Walden but the 2-million-word journal that he kept until six months before he died. Its continuing relevance lies in the vivid spectacle of a man wrestling with tensions that still confound us. The journal illustrates his almost daily balancing act between recording scrupulous observations of nature and expressing sheer joy at the beauty of it all. "

Still stands at about a tie between Dolomite and Manos for worse movie ever viewed (more than once). Mathematically, Manos wins for its ratio of epic gravitas that is inversely proportional to its entertainment value. At least Dolomite is hilarious. His kung fu is breathtaking. And yes, of course, I've seen Plan 9 From Outer Space, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, and Bela Lugosi's last film. But not all the way thru, I think. Maybe. It's a blur, like that Jodie Foster movie Contact that Eric and I walked out of, "this sucks".
Source:

6:45am. Dolomite. I pondered, "Have I seen a movie worse than Dolomite?" "Is 'Manos - hands of fate' worse than Dolomite?". Without question "Manos" is by far the worse movie I have ever watched in its entirety or in part. One of Eric's favorite films of all time. Hence we watched the entire thing. Without MST3000. It is indescribable. But worth it for each scene with Manos. Tantalizing fact: he wears a full length cape. By the way, you can expect great and exceptional things when a main character wears a cape. It's a bold commitment to present something awesome. "Manos - hands of fate" delivers. Conclusion, nothing I've seen even on Mystery Science Theatre of any period is worse than "Manos". Relative to "Manos", "Dolomite" is a big budget cinema treat. A thoughtful well written, performed and directed rendering of the complexities in the world of an exceptional pimp. Renee Schiber, can you think of of a worse film than "Manos"?

Does Public Radio Have a Diversity Problem? (14 min)

This piece got me thinking...I haven't listened to NPR All Things Considered, etc for years now. (Nor CNN, MSNBC, etc) Not for my daily news fix. I do go to the NPR site or links to choose from awesome content to read or listen to in isolated bits. I do have immense appreciation and respect for NPR. NPR has compelling and brilliant storytellers with engaging FM voices but the presentation is emotionally exhausting, too manipulative for me. I'm a weeny. In general, I feel manipulated because to be fully engaged I am made to feel empathic, choose the proper side, get upset about some social injustice (...or worse) be uplifted, etc by a personal struggle - both are fairly tedious for my news junky mindset. And boring. My mind works that way anyway. Plus, I don't enjoy being part of a choir being 'fed'. It may be unfounded, but that's how it feels. More objectively, there is NO question about the stellar reputation of NPR content, the quality and factual integrity. But it's a unified voice. I know where the vantage point will be on any given feature or topic. How the story will be told. More akin to informative editorials than news because of how and what they choose to present, or not, and how opposing views are presented - there are certainly no 'other' voices or 'opposing' view points on staff. So the "public" doesn't seem well represented and therefore less interesting. Not exactly sure how to say what I mean there. A preferred source? CSPAN! Which I don't have tv access to again yet. Epic web site. Unadulterated, unedited, in context, primary sources via talks, speeches, and interviews. When there's a political speech to catch, always CSPAN - no talking heads telling me watch to listen for or tell me what I heard. Makes a tremendous difference, time to process, before I listen to reactions. Chatting, not ranting from me. Just some thoughts.

Mysterious Hurricane Harvey ‘sea monster’ finally identified (PHOTOS)

"All three of these species occur off Texas and have large fang-like teeth. Too bad you can't clearly see the tip of the tail. That would differentiate between the ophichthid and the congrids." No chances of an encounter, lives too deep and I won't swim the Texas toxic coast. It's just a reminder of the epic, freaky, stuff in the water that covers 70% of Earth. Love all water, but prefer to immerse in enclosures of chemical water. If natural, I avoid touching the bottom 😬...as confirmed below. Plus, a brush on my leg of seaweed could lead to a scene that induces mass panic and compells others to flee the water akin to a shark attack. "The nightmarish creature measures less than a meter long and typically buries itself in the ocean floor at depths of between 30 and 90 meters, but the intensity of Hurricane Harvey may have dislodged it."

Harry Dean Stanton, cult American actor, dies aged 91

Go in Peace. Rest well after a full, long-lived, life. Has is huge personal favorite, I didn't realize was so old. He always seemed old, looked weary and weathered. Unique character actor. An eclectic body of work. I haven't seen enough of it, especially the late stuff, but he was prolific. So real onscreen, edgy, with a non-charasmatic presence that could match any other on the screen. Dark, disturbing, recessive - holding something back but not a liar. Told a story with just his face, fixed, odd, intense gaze, and a mysteriously anxious or indifferent demeanour that went unexplained by a requisite back story. Sympathetic, tragic, or asshole. Uncomfortable, awkward, presence. Did really the freaky weird dude perfectly, brilliantly genuine, believable - but not repulsive. Though I always thought he 'looked' smelly. Doctorate in Cool. He was a genuine, gritty, hard-core, über-cool, Hollywood rebel of the generation of post/alt Rat Pack, anti-establishment, cool. A dark protype in pre-poser days with cool that was intense but fresh and real. Never in the headlines or photos for stupidity. Though no doubt there was plenty. Never knew a detail about him. Obviously intelligent, intense, off, cool, my fave! "In the 1960s, Stanton and Nicholson were part of a clique of hard-living Hollywood rebels which also included Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and various rock stars."

The First White President

What is "white privilege"? It's been a struggle to explain to those who have it, benefit from it, but don't wield it with intent. Finally, the best example and definition in modern US history - unequivocally. I try not to harp blindly on race, but I cannot ignore it's subtle significance for immeasurable consequence. "Trump is the first president to have served in no public capacity before ascending to his perch. But more telling, Trump is also the first president to have publicly affirmed that his daughter is a “piece of ass.” The mind seizes trying to imagine a black man extolling the virtues of sexual assault on tape (“When you’re a star, they let you do it”), fending off multiple accusations of such assaults, immersed in multiple lawsuits for allegedly fraudulent business dealings, exhorting his followers to violence, and then strolling into the White House. But that is the point of white supremacy—to ensure that that which all others achieve with maximal effort, white people (particularly white men) achieve with minimal qualification."

Six decades after the murder of Emmett Till, the cousin who saw him last dies at 74

It's an odd age to be when notable people or icons from your collective memory pass away. It makes their existence, and events, so much more real. Example: We all know the story and photos. I thought of Emmit Till as in a distant place and time. I was impacted greatly but disconnected. Another racist atrocity from before my time. The death of his cousin is shocking to me because it brings the horror of Emmit's murder into my time, my consciousness, timeline. It had seemed like such a distant event until today.

The Hillbillies of Beverly Hills Umaired Pilot Episode' for 'The Beverly Hiillbillies Full Episode

Thanks Leonard Scott!! This is TV entertainment! I'd never seen the pilot. Seen every episode a million times. Inspired acting - Miss Jane is at her absolute best - and perfectly executed premise with often great social insight and commentary. First day in the mansion: "Go get us a chicken! A place this nice gotta have a big bunch of chickens!" In preparation they chop up a telephone pole - "got lots of tar and pitch, it'll burn real good!" - to start a fire in an oven to cook a flamingo Jethro caught by the cement pond and an egg from the yard that was a crochet ball. The Oxford-Eton eatin' exchange with Miss Jane made me laugh out loud. Generally entirely brilliant writing and random odd moments...like one in which suddenly and unrelated to the plot, Jethro rushes to the kithchen door dressed as an ancient Roman elite soldier. "Hey! Where you goin' boy?!" Jethro stops, announces with pride and goofy delight, "I'm goin' to the colosseum to watch Reagan give it the Democrats!!" and gives a thumbs down. In an exquisite episode, Granny is looking in the city park at the lake for crawdads to smoke. Inquisitive hippies there are totally captivated by Granny and her diligent quest to find this fantasticly described something to smoke. They fully embrace it and Granny, spread the word and more hippies gather to celebrate in the park, in anxious anticipation to smoke something awesome. Ah...the Civil War filming and crew that freaked Granny out, "General Grant?!". So Granny donned her Confederate uniform, instigated an ambush, engaged the crew firing shotguns, rifles, and a canon, from woods. You had to see it I guess. There are so many episodes that are even far better. Love the B Hillbillies!!!

"I never learned hate at home, or shame. I had to go to school for that." ~Dick Gregory Excellent piece, with video from his 1960s standup. I hope he is rediscovered and studied. But that would require much more than watching videos and reading headlines, so maybe not. It's said that he paved the way for the likes of Richard Pryer and surely influenced Dave Chappel. U.S. Army To Return Remains of Native American Boys Killed In Reform School In The 1880's

It's old, but little known, the so-called reform schools that Native children were forced into in order to civilize them - designed in fact to eliminate the culture. The last of the schools closed fairly recently. Renee and I spoke of this many times. "All the Indian there is in the race should be dead," the reform school's founder said. "Kill the Indian in him, and save the man." From 1879 until 1918, more than 10,000 Native American children from 140 tribes were sent to Carlisle. Only 158 graduated.

Driving for more than two hours a day makes you less intelligent, study finds

OH NO. "Cognitive decline is measurable over five years because it can happen fast in middle-aged and older people. This is associated with lifestyle factors such as smoking and bad diet [ and sedentary lifestyle ] — and now with time spent driving,” Mr Bakrania told the paper. "The researchers analysed the lifestyles of more than 500,000 Britons aged between 37 and 73 over five years, during which they took intelligence and memory tests. The 93,000 people who drove more than two to three hours a day typically had lower brainpower at the start of the study, which kept on declining throughout, at a faster rate than those who did little or no driving. A similar result was also found for those watching TV for more than three hours a day, who also had lower average brainpower at the start of the study which fell faster over the next five years. However, Mr Bakrania's results suggested using a computer to work or play games increased brain function. " - article

The Notion That White Workers Elected Trump Is a Myth That Suits the Ruling Class: Paul Street

"Trump didn't win the working middle class vote. The Democrats lost it." Much more than what I copied here. "But the lack of a college diploma is a highly imperfect measure of working-class status. Bill Gates never got a bachelor’s degree. Neither did his proletarian comrade Mark Zuckerberg. Occupation and income are far better indicators. Exit polls include the second category but not the first. And nearly 60 percent of white people without college degrees who voted for Trump were in the top half of the income distribution. One in 5 white Trump voters without a college degree had a household income over $100,000. Another difficulty with the white Trumped-proletarian narrative is that most whites without an allegedly class-defining college degree don’t vote. Thanks in part to this silent election boycott, Trump got votes from approximately just a fifth of the 136 million white American adults who lack the higher ed diploma."

Why casually using 'nigger' may be a very bad idea. It doesn't change the meaning for those who use the word as a threat, etc. It makes it more accessible to everyone. I'd rather not hear it all over the world, except for US stand-up comics - in context it can be hilarious.

How American Presidents Used to Speak Overseas

No one will read this, it's excellent, it speaks to my primary criticism of President Trump. Why he dies not represents us well. Along with his juvenile rhetorical style, lack of factual correctness, he embodies in spirit none of the values that define us as Americans. Idealism. Inclusiveness and commonality in humanity, to be simple. "But the major departure in Trump’s speech was its seeming indifference to the American idea. At least when speaking to the world, American presidents have emphasized an expanded “us.” All men are created equal. Every man is a German. Ich bin ein Berliner. Our realities in America have always been flawed, but our idea is in principle limitless. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." #longreads

23 arrested as Virginia KKK rally draws hundreds of counterprotesters

Times like these I love Dave Chappell for giving me a fantastic alternate association when I read or hear "White Power" - it's immediately hilarious. His character punctuates significant racist babbling by lazily flipping up his hand and saying, not shouting, monotone "white power" like amen - you have to see it, I can't explain. "Sir! I am not associated in any way with any niggerdom" Clarence Bigsby, the blind self-unaware black white-supremacist. Niggerdom?! What?! Ha ha ha! The man who while in Congress tried to shut NASA down to save money. "Pence is heading up a newly revived National Space Council. President Donald Trump re-established the advisory group last week." Buzz Aldrin likely had a much better time at this event than at Trump's last week.

Sheila Michaels Dies: Feminist Who Popularized Use of 'Ms.'

Peace in Eternity dear lady. The American feminist is revered for her campaign to popularise the “Ms” title throughout the 60s. While the term itself is believed to have been coined in the 1760s as an abbreviation for the word “mistress,” it was Michaels who brought it to mainstream as a symbol for women not defined by any relationship to men.

Ivanka Trump Targeted by Man Armed with Throwing Knives

Stunning - celebrity posts from me! I HATE celebrity posts. Odd things have caught my eye this morning. The planet is imploding. Crazed persons and peoples rule the day: "When he was taken into custody, we're told he claimed to own Trump Tower and that he was a U.S. Senator there to see Ivanka."

How Kesha Recovered from Her Jerry Seinfeld Hug Denial Trauma Thanks to Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan is a hugger! Or is at least a very specialized one who knows when hugs are most needed and how to execute them...then does it. That blows my mind. Maybe he's old and senile? Or it's the warm and charming side of him we never see thru icy publicity and press. I saw the video clip. I had never seen her before that video, I didn't know her name, fame, or occupation before this article, but as a fellow hugger I could see that she had made a huge (painful) faux pas - which she admits. Bob made it better...I love this! In all the decades of having Dylan in my life, Renee was a HUGE life long fan - I've listened to endless hours of Dylan daily, I've never had warm feelings about him until today: "She (Kesha) went on to describe how she got over the snafu: "My idol in life, Bob Dylan, agreed to meet up with me because we were playing the same festival. And I was like so scared, because I had just got hug denied. So I was a little hug traumatized... And he just opened his beautiful arms and gave me the most wonderful, healing Bob Dylan hug that I had ever dreamt of, and I just could care less about anything else." She added that he even gave her a hug after their conversation, too, making her twice-blessed by the folk legend."

Blac Chyna's new lawyer to seek restraining order against Rob Kardashian

What is this person famous for? The name caught my eye and of course immediately annoyed me. So I read the article - Mr. Kardashian is a dangerously immature ass. Her name doesn't matter. I hope she can live a good life with her new child in loving peace.
