The West (Episode 4)

Memorial Day task: watch THE WEST presented by Ken Burns PBS, Episode 4. ALL people in our nation, citizen or not, should watch and learn from this single episode. It presents a pivotal period that shaped, defined, and changed our nation, the effects from which we still burn today. It's a micro time-capsule of an era that we aren't as familiar with as we think. The topics will be familiar, the details will not. No, it's NOT details and images of slavery. At all. Not Abraham Lincoln, eloquent speeches, or explanations of divisions on the immoral economics of slavery. This is about the American West. But it was there the future question of a slave holding nation would unfold and begin to fully unravel our republic. You can gain insight, deeper understanding, and a palpable feeling for the intensity of the antebellum (pre Civil War) climate, mid 1800s, by looking at the American West. Events leading to both the Civil and Indian Wars played out in there quite dramatically, raw and vivid. Though the West had been thought to become a "safty valve" for national, social, and political, tensions - it instead exploded into bloodthirsty lawlessness and despicable violence surpassing that which would be seen in the Civil War. It indeed was about slavery, but you won't see slaves and it encompasses much more than slavery. What you will see are the souls of people and a history not long ago removed. Something to reflect on during Memorial Day weekend as we look to honor those who served and sacrificed their lives believing that there was something much greater than themselves at stake. And to remember with respect the ones who fought and were killed because they were plucked from life and placed in combat with their comrades, brothers in arms for whom anything would be willingly sacrificed. (...I'm far removed from any military. I have no experiences, directly or indirectly by those who have served. So I don't really know what I'm talking about with war. I try to open my mind, expose it to uncomfortable realities, out of respect and to gain the little I can process.)

Opinion | The Problem Isn’t Food Stamps, It’s Poverty

The folks who voted Trump 2016 in places with stagnant job economies like Kentucky, where dependence on Obamacare and Food Stamps is wide spread, had better wake up after they collapse from shock and take notes for the next election. Strike One - healthcare, Strike Two - Food Stamps, Strike Three? You and your children are not qualified for jobs in the growth industries of the present or any future market. That is the issue. Relying on dreams of past employment is misleading - all lies, so unfair and cruel. Budget cuts gone unacceptably wild. The real issue is that people cannot make enough money from low wage jobs to provide the minimal basics or survival, like food and shelter. When one doesn't study anything about the history, economics, or sociology, of one's own country it is easy to recreate a problem or dramatically worsen it and thus weaken the fabric of an entire society. There is NEVER A REASON TO DENY NUTRITION AND SUSTENANCE to any human being. Especially children. Shifting the burden to states will, without question, drop many in need from the program and accentuate the burden of poverty as starvation increases again across this rich nation. It will compromise developmental health of little ones, performance in school, and the labor force. It will not increase the labor force, this is already the working poor. Back to the days of sponsoring children in the US thru "Feed the Children". I'll never forget those commercials, images, and pleas for donations for American children. Outrageous! "Benefits average only $1.40 per person per meal, ineligible recipients are rare and incorrect payments are few. Into the bargain, food stamps support the farm economy and the broader economy by creating a bigger market for food and supplying cash that is quickly spent."

That so many working households qualify for the aid reflects the prevalence of low wage jobs, the real problem Washington should be solving.

Alien: Covenant: Trailer 2

FOR TORI, MY LOVE. Oh my! This is how much I LOVE my little sister Tori. I just bought our tickets to see this film for her birthday next week. I sincerely offered iMax, but she turned it down without hesitation, "No, no, that's okay." C'mon, are you sure?! You've never seen iMax! She wisely said, "You'll never make it." Yeah, okay, busted... I like to be a fun sister, so I take Tori to whatever she wants to see for her birthday. I have seen "Desperately Seeking Susan" staring Madonna (sigh), "He-Man, Masters of the Universe" starring Dolph Lundgren - we were 2 of 3 people in the audience (ha ha ha!), some teenagers-die-horribly movie in which Tori told me when to cover my eyes and when to uncover them even tho she'd not seen the film before (thanks for the warnings!)...Epic cinema throughout the many decades. On tv Elaine and I watched a movie with Tori, she was like 9 or 10. We were horrified at a scene with a gooey messed up body on a barn floor that was still alive - when it started to emit crap from its orifaces and open guts. "Oh my god!!!" Tori turned to us and said, gently with very mild irritation, "You guys, that's just blue oatmeal." Hey! She's right, ha ha ha! Tori's favorite story...I came home from college to visit. Hang out with my little sister, 7 or 8? I'll be super fun sis, eat junk and watch whatever she wants to see on tv. We got junk food, I got a large tub of red licorice - yum! We watched "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Holy shit. I watched and ate the entire tub of red licorice. That night I dreamt that Freddy Kruger's hat, a grey fedora, appeared in the middle of the kitchen floor. Then a hand and arm rose up thru the hat, then hand slowly lifted to stretch out and extend the knife fingers. The hand slowly closed up and the arm went back down into the hat on the kitchen floor. Next...Freddy Kruger's hat lifted from the floor a couple inches and I could see eyes, then cheeks, nose, ears, he's melting slowly upwards, backwards, from under his fedora thru the kitchen floor. Great, this does suck. I sent the girls with me away, I got a huge knife from the block on the kitchen counter. He swung knife bladed hands at me and I averted them. I swung and slashed him thru his red and grey plaid flannel shirt into, across, his chest. A couple of times. I woke up and told Tori about it. She was captivated and ultimately hysterically laughing. I had to tell her the story a few times over the years. So if you see or hear Tori and I reference 'no red licorice', that's why. Love you sis! We'll have big fun next week at this fantastic film. I'm not thinking crab legs after is the best choice. ;) #Fandango

Why whites aren't the most racist people

DATA, real information - if you can handle it. Wake up, people. Stop the tedious race baiting that only fuels more racism. Looking for it and harping on it doesn't serve a real purpose except to feed your own anger. I faced racist attacks from both blacks and whites growing up. Racism is a contagious and insidious state of mind that blinds and deafens. Veils the senses in bitter darkness thru which everything is filtered. It is maddening to try to break thru the darkness, to enlighten and lighten the ugly burden - people seem addicted to it. They want to cultivate it, not be freed from it.

A radical view for age of superbugs: Don't fight infections. Live with them

"Her approach, in a nutshell: Stop worrying so much about fighting infections. Instead, help the body tolerate them." Fighting antibiotic-resistant super bugs with more drugs is an impossible feat. And it indeed doesn't make sense. Helping the body to endure and repair the effects of infection, to survive. This is brilliant! "Scientists have focused for decades on the how the immune system battles pathogens. Ayres believes other elements of our physiology are at least as important - so she's hunting for the beneficial bacteria that seem to help some patients maintain a healthy appetite and repair damaged tissue even during bouts of serious disease. If she can find them - and she's already begun to do so - she believes she can develop drugs that will boost those qualities in patients who lack them and help keep people alive through battles with sepsis, malaria, cholera, and a host of other diseases. Her approach, in a nutshell: Stop worrying so much about fighting infections. Instead, help the body tolerate them."

A Radical Approach against Superbugs: Learn to Live with Them

Brilliant! "Her approach, in a nutshell: Stop worrying so much about fighting infections. Instead, help the body tolerate them. And no, she's not spouting some New Age California mumbo jumbo about letting the body heal itself. An associate professor at the Salk Institute in the heart of San Diego's booming biotech beach, Ayres is harnessing all manner of high-tech tools from the fields of microbiomics, genetics, and immunology - and looking to a menagerie of animals - to sort out why some individuals tolerate infection so much better than others. It's work that's desperately needed, Ayres said, as it becomes ever more clear that our standard approach to fighting infection using antibiotics and antivirals is hopelessly inadequate. The drugs don't work for all diseases, they kill off good bacteria along with bad - and their wanton use is contributing to the rise of antibiotic resistant bacteria, or "superbugs," which terrify disease experts because there are few ways to stop them."

Homo Naledi: Chamber Full of Bones Reveals Primitive Humans Lived Alongside Our Ancestors in Africa - and Deliberately Hid Their Dead

It represents the richest fossil hominin site in Africa ever found.(!) Rare and huge. Exciting! This will alter the family tree. "A recently-discovered species of early human appears to have hidden its dead, indicating a more sophisticated level of intelligence and possibly even the early signs of culture. Homo naledi is a species of hominin that lived between 335,000 and 236,000 years ago. Scientists announced its discovery in 2015 after finding a cave just outside Johannesburg, South Africa, full of its remains. It represents the richest fossil hominin site in Africa ever found. The discovery is remarkable, because the species would have lived alongside Homo sapiens - our direct ancestors. Before H. naledi was discovered, scientists did not think any other hominin species lived at the same time as the first humans in Africa." ~ article

'I've got nothing to hide': Fox News' Shepard Smith talks about being gay

What?!?! Shepard Smith is my fave journalist even though his is the king of Fox News, the real one for years, not O'Reilly. He's great! Direct, intense, intelligent, he's outspoken when outrageous events occur - but in a way that is compelling and satisfying, not inflammatory Fox or CNN-like garbage. This is from a different article: "OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Longtime Fox News anchor Shepard Smith has opened up about his sexuality and the impact it has had on his career. Smith mentioned in a recent speech at the University of Mississippi that he had never stood in front of a group of people to talk about being gay, but added that he has "nothing to hide." Smith says he began living his "truth" within the past decade. He says he never "outed" himself because he didn't think he was "in." Smith told students he spent many years constantly working, in part because he didn't want to deal with his sexuality. Now, Smith says he doesn't think about his sexuality much. He says he goes to work, covers the news and goes "home to the man I'm in love with."

Physical exercise increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis in male rats provided it is aerobic and sustained

I listened to a lengthy report about this research. I can't post that or the specific details. The definitive conclusion is that in adults exercise produces neurogenesis - brain cell production, with long-term effects including marked improved capacity to learn and for memory. Keep saying, got to do something! Turning into jello inside and out. It sucks to see and experience. An easy fix!

The Shooting of Jordan Edwards

The officer killed an unarmed 15 year old who was not a suspect, violated no law, nor committed any crime. "There was no alcohol found in the car, and there is apparently no evidence the kids in it were drinking. While the car’s passengers also reported hearing gunshots as they were going to the car, they were not armed. (It’s not clear whether shots were fired or what the sound was.)"

Bertha Benz - the woman at the wheel of the first ever road trip

The title of the article sells her very short. She was a visionary whose money and ideas expanded the scope of the invention of the car and put Mercedes-Benz on top. "Her name was Bertha Benz, born today in 1849 in Pforzheim, Germany. She married to Karl Benz – the man credited today with inventing the car – but as a lady of independent means she had provided much of the funding for the project. Moreover, while Karl was a genius engineer, he was neither a businessman nor a visionary. His ambition for his car was so limited he didn't even think to fit it with a fuel tank."

Exxon's Own Research Confirmed Fossil Fuels' Role in Global Warming Decades Ago | InsideClimate News

Denying that "Climate Change is impacted by man" is the falling for the same fatal profit scenario that obfuscated, denied, "smoking is linked to lung cancer". There's never a simple absolute, that's not science and idiotic to the highest degree. But, climate change denial is 100% about profit. Denying man's impact on the climate is just this stupid: Just because you smoke does not mean you'll get or die of lung, mouth, or throat, cancer. That's not a fact, there's no proof. Nonsmokers get those cancers. That's a fact. Therefore, we don't really know that smoking causes cancer at all. Smoking does damage the lungs, but smoking poses no real mortal danger and doesn't effect your body, just your lungs. Yes, that is exactly the same logic fed to and uttered by climate change denial. Like the tobacco industry cover-up of tobacco's direct link to cancer in the 1960's, Exxon sponsored research in 1979 (did the research themselves) that quantified the impact of fossil fuels on the environment and the climate concluding in TOTAL CONCURRENCE with the then called "green house effect". The article is very detailed and well-cited. (I've posted articles on the Exxon research before, twice.) Big Tobacco told us smoking was safe. Tobacco sponsorship (PR) money meant everyone in movies smoked, required to whether they were smokers or not - fact. There was research published in the early 1960s that quantified a direct link between tobacco and cancer. Though it was known or suspected well before that. The tobacco industry buried the research, that's documented in their internal documents, and continued to pay a lot of money to skew public opinion. They manipulated the nicotine to increase its addictive properties, which they still do. However, we know based on science and research that if you do smoke, there will be an impact with quantifiable, permanent, damage to your lungs and therefore your entire body due to impaired lung function (less oxygen, quite dire to the brain and heart, for example). Whether it's a cancer or not, you will suffer widespread degrees of consequences. You increase the risk of cancer exponentially and once you do it's too often too late. If you deny industrial impact on the environment, atmosphere, and therefore the climate - which is the Earth's regulating ecosystem...then do not EVER tell anyone NOT to smoke. Even your kids.

High Ground Is Becoming Hot Property as Sea Level Rises

Climate change is racist! Nice...Jim Crow laws relegated black people to the urban high ground which is now prime real estate. No doubt they will lose their property without proper compensation and move to the lowlands that will flood. So climate change is ignored because it directly impacts profit margins and poor or less developed regions - where lives are cheap and expendable.

Some People Suffer from Face Blindness for Other Races

This impacts the viability of eyewitness testimony. "We tend to be worse at telling apart faces of other races than those of our own race, studies have found. Now research shows some people are completely blind to features that make other-race faces distinct. Such an impairment could have important implications for eyewitness testimony in situations involving other-race suspects." Significant exposure to other races does help mitigate this.

Neither Wolf Nor Dog - Native American Movie Trailer

I hope we get an Austin screening. Neither Wolf nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder (Neither Wolf Nor Dog #1) by Kent Nerburn (Goodreads Author) In this 1996 Minnesota Book Award winner, Kent Nerburn draws the reader deep into the world of an Indian elder known only as Dan. It’s a world of Indian towns, white roadside cafes, and abandoned roads that swirl with the memories of the Ghost Dance and Sitting Bull. Readers meet vivid characters like Jumbo, a 400-pound mechanic, and Annie, an 80-year-old Lakota woman living in a log cabin. Threading through the book is the story of two men struggling to find a common voice. Neither Wolf nor Dog takes readers to the heart of the Native American experience. As the story unfolds, Dan speaks eloquently on the difference between land and property, the power of silence, and the selling of sacred ceremonies. This edition features a new introduction by the author. “This is a sobering, humbling, cleansing, loving book, one that every American should read.” — Yoga Journal

Charlton Heston - Political Correctness Vs Common Sense

What about the legislation in this video? I support it. I don't trust or support the NRA. Felons shouldn't have guns and should get an automatic sentence for having one - used in a crime or not. Legislation the NRA proposed to Clinton, who rejected it, and they supported with $1M in one state. Do not dis my man!! He was not a fanatic about guns. He was not an idiot. Try to listen to this ENTIRE piece with open ears and mind. Difficult for highly polarized people to do. His advice to the audience is valid.
