Fat Patties

Hopeful Delivery in Carbondale from Fat Patties. Epic looking/sounding food. Tough to choose. What I did NOT order but super duper wanted to was a blue cheese Angus burger with bacon and beer batter onion rings etc. What I DID order...wee veggie burger made with black beans and brown rice (ew! ๐Ÿ˜), super yum salad, fried green beans, and strawberry rhubarb pie. We'll see how it goes. Rats! They only have apple pie today. Still good.

Loving Your Enemies, a sermon by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Soul Food Who doesn't love to listen to MLK?! Listen and read the text. You won't but you should. You assume you understand from the title of the speech, I'm sure you do NOT because you've never heard the entire text. At least keep reading now? Jesus said to love your enemies...he did not say to like them or approve of them. These are mere sentiments. This love Jesus speaks of is like one of the Greek words for love, 'agape' - a redemptive, universal, love that seeks nothing in return. "Love is understanding, redemptive goodwill for all men, so that you love everybody, because God loves them. You refuse to do anything that will defeat an individual, because you have agape in your soul". Love that last line! This has always been my karma, mindset. A birth defect. It's tough to comprehend or explain so I'm pleased to see it in print. I wish more people shared my world view. It's so super easy. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Speech - excerpt: "The Greek language comes out with another word for love. It is the word agape. And agape is more than eros; agape is more than philia; agape is something of the understanding, creative, redemptive goodwill for all men. It is a love that seeks nothing in return. It is an overflowing love; it’s what theologians would call the love of God working in the lives of men. And when you rise to love on this level, you begin to love men, not because they are likeable, but because God loves them. You look at every man, and you love him because you know God loves him. And he might be the worst person you’ve ever seen." "And this is what Jesus means, I think, in this very passage when he says, "Love your enemy." And it’s significant that he does not say, "Like your enemy." Like is a sentimental something, an affectionate something. There are a lot of people that I find it difficult to like. I don’t like what they do to me. I don’t like what they say about me and other people. I don’t like their attitudes. I don’t like some of the things they’re doing. I don’t like them. But Jesus says love them. And love is greater than like. Love is understanding, redemptive goodwill for all men, so that you love everybody, because God loves them. You refuse to do anything that will defeat an individual, because you have agape in your soul. And here you come to the point that you love the individual who does the evil deed, while hating the deed that the person does. This is what Jesus means when he says, "Love your enemy." This is the way to do it. When the opportunity presents itself when you can defeat your enemy, you must not do it."

"Honoring our People,” at Collinsville High School on Saturday, March 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. My sister Renee had sent me a CD of theirs years ago, told me all about them with great enthusiasm. And another time she had sent me a huge illustrated poster of the Cahokia Mounds site. And she taught at that high school. Where we all had attended school, including my father who later became vice principal.

Texas explosions: New Austin blast 'may be tripwire-activated'

AUSTIN?!? On the BBC. Oh no. More explosions and deaths. Thought to be racially motivated, but not certain. I'm devastated. So totally not Austin, the city must be in shock. They're told to stay indoors because the 4th explosion was triggered by tripwire. The other bombs were packages left at front doors. Let's march and walk out against bombing! Oh wait, like guns and murder, we have laws against it - yet it still happens. It takes a community and vigilance to deal with crimes like these, when people cross far beyond the line there's almost always someone else who knows or is aware. "The local National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) president Nelson Linder told NBC news that the two murdered victims had links to local prominent African-American families and were connected by the same Methodist church." "With the city on high alert, a concert by hip-hop band the Roots was cancelled on Saturday [part of SXSW] after organisers received a bomb threat via e-mail."

GREAT PROGRAM. PODCAST/listen!! Ida B. Wells was an investigative reporter who exposed the systematic lynching of black men in the South. Her work made her the most famous black woman in the country. But when she died in 1931, at the age of 68, The New York Times failed to write an obituary. Obituaries in The Times have been long dominated by white men. Now, the paper of record is trying to fix the record.

Thorny question? No. Unless you're a recent immigrant or the descendent of one, likely you have little to no idea. They should do free DNA testing for us historical locals. Looking at my family tree tells me a list of names. Census should have been on this 300 years ago. I don't have any real affiliation with Africa. Wish I did. Except for my stepfather ๐Ÿ’•Ouedraogo Bernard ๐Ÿ’•who is from Burkina Faso, that is very meaningful to me. Far more than a distant unknown potential connection I decide to adopt and wrap in colourful fabrics. But that's just me. Everyone should do their own things and rock whatever they choose to identify with.

My chest hurts. :( This is why... very powerful stuff going on in the brain - same areas are triggered in mom's brains with pics of their own babies as with pics of puppies - as well as endorphins etc released when with puppies. Puppies get brain stuff too.

In my hometown where I live again now and my old university, SIU in Carbondale...Applying to graduate school now. Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - TESOL. Hope to get a teaching assistantship. Then I can teach international undergraduates special English 101 - 102 and get tuition paid for. But I would have to take 3 grad classes at the same time. Don't know if I can handle all that. I may have blown it for the fall anyway. Hope not. Kinda scary. Okay, no, this t.a. thing is very scary. Mostly done applying. Transcripts etc turned in to the department. Got to finish the online application to the university itself. Got to get accepted to the university first. I don't see the TESOL department in Carbondale as highly sought after. No offense. Hurray! it's not in the education department!!!!

A place with lots of fabulous yarn. This pic does it no justice. Not interested in regular acrylic yarn a la Walmart or Target. If I'm going to all the time and work to knit it better be fabulous. I'm not like mom. She can make fabulous from any yarn, super complex, in multiples, fast. Without a pattern. She could knit and drive back in the day. WTF?!?! No sir, I must to watch what I'm knitting, every single stitch until I get some serious time in. Like a year. But now I can try all sorts of things with her help. She is truly a masterful knitter. Seriously. When I was a little kid (1st or 2nd grade and up)she would let me knit the plain areas - no colors or weird stitches. She would correct any mistakes I made in a flash - dropped stitches= a hole or vertical running unravel, extra stitches= misshapen. She'd just fix it and hand it back to me. (I was ready to cry, no need!) That was her cool cardigan phase - they were like coats, warm, thick and covered the butt. Lots of sisters, lots of knitting. Later she showed me how to start and finish a piece, block it, and assemble. Some cool stitches. I never made it to colors. Not yet. (It looks like a lot of work, counting, and paying attention - none of my fortes). Think my first one will be solid colored with cool designs in it. Color seems like a buzz kill right now. Unless it's a scarf, poncho, or shawl. Straight lines/sides and just stripes I can do. Exciting all around!!

An "In his farewell address to the nation in January 1989, Reagan beautifully wove his view of free trade and immigration into his vision of a free society: “I’ve spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don’t know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, windswept, God-blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and heart to get here.” Compare Reagan’s hopeful, expansive, and inclusive view of America with the dour, crabbed, and exclusive view that characterizes certain conservatives who would claim his mantle.
